Phuket Island also called the pearl of the Andaman Sea, is located of the south western coast of Thailand, about 1000 km south of Bangkok.
The Island used to be a rich Tin and Rubber producing area, and made some rich people, they where called the Tin and Rubber barons of Phuket.
Many Chinese immigrants came in this early boom to Phuket and settled here, the Chinese influence can still be seen in Architecture and lifestyle.
In the early seventies the first tourists came to the island and it has boomed since. Small Fisher Villages like Patong have become main tourist spots with Hotels, a big nightlife, shopping malls and a tourist infrastructure over the whole island and along the coast.
Today Phuket is the main tourist spot in South East Asia, 3 million or more tourists visit every year. Main season is from November to April. Many beaches have become big tourist centres like Kata, Karon, Surin and Patong Beach the main centre.
The beaches of Phuket are still some of the most beautiful in South East Asia and even the Tsunami in 2004 could not keep Tourists back for long, today the tourist trade is bigger than ever.
